Out of Hours Lift Repair: Student Accommodation Bearing Failure
At EES Vertical Transportation, we’re regularly asked to carry out works with minimum disruption to end users, which from time to time means weekend and night working.
In one recent case, a lift in a student accommodation block was making a lot of noise and was in urgent need of a quick turnaround repair. We were asked to investigate, and diagnosed a fully collapsed bearing as the main issue.
On removal of the shaft, it became apparent that the shaft had suffered severe scarring from the lift being operated in this condition, and would therefore also require replacement. As the repair required a quick turnaround, sourcing a replacement shaft from the manufacturer was not a viable option, so we had one manufactured in our own workshop, ready for return to site the following evening.
Notice the gaps between the pulley and the support plate (left hand image). The top and bottom gaps are very different, due to wear in the bushing. The image on the right shows the replacement bushing, manufactured by us, just before the pulley was re-installed on site.
As this work was all undertaken at night over a weekend, there was very little disruption to the otherwise busy student accommodation block.

This kind of turnaround, workshop-manufactured parts, minimal site disruption, and full diagnosis-to-repair delivery, is core to how we support lift service providers and estates when a fast, reliable fix matters more than a standard lead time.
